One of things that I love about my Southgate neighborhood is that there are these tree lined streets with cute houses, kids playing in the yard and friendly neighbors. If cars are parked on both sides of the street, there is not room for two cars to get by. So you have to take turns. One car will pull over and wait for the other one to get through. While this is something that we learn in kindergarten (okay not driving), the politeness of taking turns is so amazing. I wonder how that graceful way of making room for each other with the confidence that room will be made for us would impact our communities. Often, I feel we try to defend our turf, our place, our status, our whatever. This taking turns which is born out the fact that there are not enough yards or meters for two cars to safely pass each other reminds me of the body of Christ where we are aware of each other and care for reach other (or at least our paint jobs).
Question: Where in your life have you made room for another person or something other than yourself? What were the feelings and challenges? What were the joys?
